5 uses for Anti-wrinkle injections that might surprise you

When we talk about anti-wrinkle injections (Botulinum toxin), most people think of an injectable treatment used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. What you may not know is that botulinum toxin has many other beneficial uses too — some of which just might surprise you.

A smoother neck (Platysmal bands)

As we age, the tendons in the neck start to protrude more and certain movements can accentuate them further.

By injecting Botulinum Toxin into the bands it smoothens their appearance and creates some softening of the transverse lines of the neck, resulting in a more youthful and rejuvenated looking neck.

20-40 units are usually required for the treatment of this area, with the predicted price range is between R1600 – R3200

Jaw clenching

The masseter muscles are facial muscles used to control the jaw (the muscle used for chewing, biting, and clenching). When overactive, it can result in jaw clenching and teeth grinding, causing symptoms like headaches, muscle tension and dental problems.

Overactive masseter muscles cause the jaw to appear prominent. With muscle relaxant injections there is resultant thinning of the masseter muscle which tends to cause facial slimming and enhancement of the cheekbones and chin.

After having botulinum injections to the masseter muscles several times, the habit is typically broken.

Pricing for TMJ-specific injections can range from R800 – R2400 per side, depending on how many units are needed (usually 10-30 units per side)

Chin

As we age the chin muscle becomes stronger and tends to pull upwards. By injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin it will relax the muscle and help with the puckering or dimpling of the skin over the chin. It also helps to soften a deepening chin crease for a more youthful appearance.

Only 4-8 units are required for treatment of this area, R320 – R640

Excessive underarm sweating
When doctors noticed that patients being treated for facial spasms were sweating less, scientists began studying whether Botulinum toxin could be a successful therapy for people with a condition called severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. The results were conclusive and Botulinum toxin was approved by the FDA for this treatment in 2004.

Excessive underarm sweating can affect confidence and quality of life. We enjoy treating patients for this condition because it is a quick, effective solution to a problem that can cause patients significant distress. Some of our patients have explained it as life changing.

Pricing for axillary hyperhidrosis can range from R8 000-R12 000 and treatment may last up to 9 months

Blowtox – for scalp sweating:

Botulinum toxin can also be used to treat sweating of the scalp, which is helpful during the hot summer months. There is the added benefit that it decreases oil buildup, which is appreciated by people with frizzy, unmanageable hair due to excessive moisture, or those who exercise regularly and still want to look great!

20-50 units are usually needed to treat this area, a price range from R1600-R4000

If you’re considering anti-wrinkle injections as treatment for one of the above conditions, do your research and seek out a reputable doctor for a consultation and treatment plan.
